Canvas Miscalculate

Last weekend was really awesome y'all.  Jordan and I had the pleasure of hosting my brother, Scott, and his fiancé, Elizabeth, at our house.  It was both a productive and fun weekend!

For Christmas, these two bought us a certificate for a painting class!!  ! I love to give and receive presents that can be used/consumed!  They make brilliant gift ideas! Plus, it gave us the opportunity to plan a weekend to visit with them!  Since we live about 1.5 hours away from each other, it’s difficult to sync up our schedules.

S & E got in Friday evening and we stayed up later than I expected.  The time just flew by as we visited and caught up with each other.

After a light breakfast, we spent Saturday morning doing some wedding prep stuff.  Maybe it’s a girl thing or maybe it’s just me, but I adore endlessly chatting about wedding plans.  Big, small, fancy, or casual, I love to talk about the details and celebration of love!

I think we were all a little worn out but Saturday afternoon.  We grilled up some delicious chicken for dinner and before we knew it, it was already time to head to our painting class!

The venue was called “Carefree Colors”.  Like other paint places, this was a BYOB place where you can relax and paint with friends.  One of the unique things about Carefree Colors was that you can choose to paint one of their stock pictures or you can bring your own picture to paint.  I like that kind of format because each person gets to paint whatever they want and you don’t end up with several paintings of the same exact thing.

I didn’t put a lot of thought into what I wanted to paint, but I was leaning towards a close up picture of birch trees.  I printed a random picture from the internet thinking, “this would totally be easy”.  Spoiler alert: It was definitely NOT easy to paint.

Here are some pictures of our group:

Top Left: Scott wasn’t sure what to paint so he went with a vibrant peacock from one of the stock selections that Carefree Colors had.  I love the colors in his picture.
Top Right: This is Elizabeth and I just beginning our painting.  (I have no idea why I look so darn tired but this is actually one of the better pictures I have)
Bottom: We used acrylic paints and this is a close up of Jordan’s paint plate.  He was painting an abstract picture and as a result, used a lot of different colors.

I love the subject of birch trees, but I totally miscalculated how difficult it would be to paint something with such neutral colors and subtle shadows.  The trees were side by side so it was difficult to paint any sort of dimension (1 tree further back from the others).  I’m not completely happy with my finished painting, but I’m still proud of my amateur work.  Plus, it was a LOT of fun to hang out with these guys, even if my painting didn’t turn out perfect.  Next time, I might keep it simple and go with one of the stock pictures.
Top Left: Scott and I just getting started.
Top Right: Jordan and I.  E-gak, we look exhausted and the poor lighting does us no favors. Oh well.
Bottom: From L to R the artists are – Jordan, Me, Elizabeth, Scott.  Not bad everyone!  I do love Scott’s peacock painting.  The blues and greens look so majestic.

After our painting struggles and successes, we had a relaxing evening with a fire outside.  Aren’t these pictures cool?
Left: The blue, pink, and green flames are a result of the “Mystic Fire” powder. Very cool stuff.
Right: Beautiful fire sparks.

That’s all for now!  Happy weekend!
