Halloween Week 2013

Image
Halloween week seemed to sneak up on me, but I have to admit, it was a good week!  At work we had a chili-cook off to celebrate Halloween and raise money for the 7 Loaves Food Pantry .  It is truly a great cause and we beat our record dollars raised last year! (2012 - $505.00 / 2013 $616).  There are several categories that everyone votes on, and this year I won the "Kooky Concoction" award (most unique)!  This was the first year I entered a chili and I decided to compete with a white chicken chili.  When I decided to enter, I realized that I've never made chili before!  Every self respecting Texas woman needs to know how to make chili!  I guess that's one of the things that inspired me to enter this year. This a picture of my final presentation.  I laugh at that description, but I seriously think the presentation is one of the reasons I won any kind of category.  My chili was called "Ghostly White" and I had a few extra garnishes to...

Blankets of Fleece and Beds of Flowers

Been a pleasant week so far.  The weather in Texas has been beautiful lately!  We've had the pleasure of enjoying our annual 2 weeks of Fall before Winter sets in.  I've enjoyed being at the house with the windows open. This week I was able to finish a fleece blanket I've been working on.  I wrote a previous post about making a fleece like this and you can read about that HERE .  The blanket I finished this time is just for Jordan and I (previous blankets have been gifts).  I made this one pretty large so Jordan can comfortably use it and kept to a neutral pattern and color so that it can be used year round (I'm cold all the time).  It does fit in well with the Christmas colors though which is just around the corner.  ;) If you're new to crocheting, I recommend starting with a project of this nature.  Fleece blankets can be done fairly quickly, can be made in any size and color, and keep you warm while making them!   Last...

Burnin' Down the House

This past weekend Jordan and I had an amazing date to learn how to blow glass!  It was totally cool and we learned so much!  It all started from a Groupon we found online for a place called Marrs Glass Studio .  The event was advertised as a BYOB glass blowing class that included a quick informal instruction, hands on crafting, and the opportunity to create your own piece of glass to take home!  Uh, yes please! We decide to make it a double date with our friends, Mallory and Nathan.  That helped to spread around the cost and it was WAY more fun with a small group of people.   Mallory and I  I was a procrastinator and kept forgetting to get our session on the calendar.  Luckily for us, my procrastination turned out to be a blessing because the weather was nice and cool to counter the heat of the glass shop.  Ya'll, the kiln was 2000 degrees in that place.  Yes, the 3 zeros after that 2 is NOT a typo. So we arrived at the shop a l...

2nd Annual Oktoberfest 2013

Image
Hi everyone!  It's been more than a week since I've posted anything but it seems like just a few days! Jordan and I have enjoyed October a lot so far so I wanted to share some pictures from the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest at my parent's lake house!  Last year they hosted the very first Oktoberfest at the lake and we all had such a blast!  At the time, the pavilion had not yet been built, but the party was still a huge success.  This year, if it's possible, the party was even better! We got a little rain the day of the event, but the sun came up right before the guests arrived and the temperature was perfect! Oktoberfest started with food prep (lots of food prep).  That morning, we did all the choppin' of onions and peppers.  Those are some staple ingredients in most Oktoberfest foods so we sliced a LOT.  20 lbs of onions to be specific. Left: Onions and peppers ready to be sliced! Top: The finished product - full box of sliced onions and pepp...

Pickles, Pumpkins, and "Pleasant" Harmony

It has been a while in between posts but I have a doozy to share today.  After reviewing some pictures, I think this post will be a little long so I will try to keep the commentary to a minimum. We began our weekend going bowling with Jordan's RVP in Primerica, Dalton and Olga. Jordan won a contest and so they treated us to pizza and bowling and we had a blast!  This is us just before the cosmic bowling began! This is one of the better shots I got of Jordan.  He moved very fast so half my pictures are blurry.   We both did pretty badly the first game.  I was having trouble finding the right weight ball that also had large or extra large finger holes (slight phobia from getting my finger stuck as a child).  Not sure what Jordan's excuse was.  "The lanes weren't waxed properly" - excuses, excuses.   Jordan is "HEA" for "Heat" and I'm "ROM" for "Romey".  We tied at 76 points.  Ouch. This i...
